Why Aren't My Steps Syncing? (iPhone and Android Fixes)
A zero step count is almost always a permissions chain, not a bug. Here's the exact order to check on iPhone and Android, and why manual steps never count.
A step count stuck at zero is almost never a broken app. It's a permissions chain with one link missing — and on Android it's usually the same link.
Work through these in order. Most people are fixed by step two.
Android
Android is where nearly all sync problems live, because the count passes through one more hop than most people realise.
1. Health Connect exists and is set up
Health Connect is built into the system on Android 14 and later. On older versions it's a separate app from the Play Store.
Open it and confirm it's actually running. If Health Connect itself has no data, nothing downstream can read any.
2. Your source app can WRITE into Health Connect
This is the one. If your count is zero, check this before anything else.
Samsung Health, Fitbit and Google Fit each need permission to write into Health Connect. Granting an app permission to read doesn't help if nothing is writing in the first place.
- Health Connect → App permissions
- Find Samsung Health / Fitbit / Google Fit
- Make sure Steps is allowed, on the write side
Samsung Health in particular does not do this by default. It's the single most common cause of a zero count on Android, and it looks exactly like a broken app.
3. EggVentures can READ from Health Connect
Now the other direction:
- Health Connect → App permissions → EggVentures → Steps: allowed
If you denied it during onboarding, it won't re-ask on its own. Grant it here.
4. Battery optimisation isn't killing background refresh
Aggressive battery managers — common on Samsung, Xiaomi, OnePlus and Huawei — suspend background work.
- Settings → Apps → EggVentures → Battery → Unrestricted
Without this, steps still count, but they arrive in bursts when you open the app rather than through the day.
iPhone
Shorter, because there's no intermediate layer — Apple Health records steps automatically.
1. Read access to Steps
- Settings → Health → Data Access & Devices → EggVentures
- Steps: on
Worth checking even if you granted it originally. iOS occasionally resets permissions after a major update, and a denied permission doesn't announce itself.
2. Don't add a third-party bridge
If you have an Apple Watch, Apple Health already deduplicates the phone and watch counts. Installing a third-party syncing app on top frequently breaks that, producing either doubled or missing steps.
3. Background App Refresh
- Settings → General → Background App Refresh → on for EggVentures
Steps still accumulate without it — Apple Health is recording regardless — but they won't reach the app until you open it.
Why manual steps never count
If you typed a number into Apple Health or Health Connect and nothing happened, that's deliberate.
Manually recorded data is filtered out on both platforms. Anything Health Connect flags as manually recorded is skipped, and on iOS the same exclusion is applied when reading the daily total.
The reason is straightforward: squads, duels and streaks all run on step counts. If typed-in numbers were accepted, every leaderboard would measure who was willing to type, and the whole social layer would be worthless. Server-side verification is only meaningful if the input is a real sensor reading.
Same reasoning applies to a per-sync cap on how many steps can be credited at once — it blocks the "phone taped to a fan" approach. More on step-challenge integrity.
Your count is right but lower than you expected
Different problem, and much more common than a sync failure. Phone step counting undercounts far more often than it overcounts:
Phone not on your body. On a desk, on charge, or in a bag on a chair, it counts nothing. This is the largest source of "missing" steps for most people.
Pushing a pram or trolley. Your torso glides along smoothly while your arms don't swing, which weakens the motion signature. Costs 20–30% routinely.
Hands in pockets, or gripping treadmill handrails. Same mechanism, smaller effect.
Comparing against a waist-worn pedometer or a research figure. Different measurement methods produce genuinely different numbers — published averages range from about 4,000 to 9,700 a day depending purely on how they were measured. Why the averages disagree so wildly.
Your real total is almost certainly higher than your phone thinks. That's worth knowing before you conclude you're less active than you are.
Still stuck
If you've been through the chain and the count is still zero:
- Open Health Connect or Apple Health directly. Does it show today's steps? If not, the problem is upstream of EggVentures entirely, and no app-side fix will help.
- Restart the phone. Genuinely fixes a stuck Health Connect more often than it should.
- Sign out and back in, which forces a fresh read rather than a cached one.
- Contact us through the app with your platform and OS version. A permission chain that's correct on paper and still failing is worth us seeing.
The short version
| Symptom | Most likely cause |
|---|---|
| Zero on Android | Source app can't write to Health Connect |
| Zero on iPhone | Read access to Steps not granted |
| Steps arrive in bursts | Battery optimisation / Background App Refresh |
| Typed-in steps ignored | Working as intended — manual entries are filtered |
| Lower than expected | Phone not on you, or pram/trolley arm-swing loss |
| Doesn't match watch | Third-party bridge breaking Health's deduplication |
Once the chain is right, it stays right — this is a one-time setup, and everything afterward is passive. Your steps feed the app whether or not you open it, which is rather the point.

Frequently asked questions
Why is my step count showing zero?
On Android it's nearly always that your source app — Samsung Health, Fitbit or Google Fit — hasn't been given permission to write into Health Connect, so there's nothing there to read. On iPhone it's usually that read access to Steps was never granted, or was granted and later revoked in Settings → Health.
Why don't my manually entered steps count?
They're filtered out deliberately. Anything recorded by hand is ignored, on both platforms, because accepting typed-in numbers would make every leaderboard and challenge meaningless. If you type in a figure and nothing changes, that's the system working correctly.
Do I need to keep the app open for steps to count?
No. Your phone counts steps continuously in a low-power motion chip whether or not any app is running, and the count is read from Apple Health or Health Connect in the background. Opening the app just shows you the number sooner.
Why is my count lower than my watch says?
Usually double-source confusion or arm-swing loss. Apple Health deduplicates iPhone and Apple Watch automatically, but third-party bridges can break that. Pushing a pram or trolley, or walking with your hands in your pockets, can cost 20–30% because the motion signature is weaker.
How long does a sync take to show up?
Background refresh runs periodically rather than instantly — roughly every fifteen minutes when the OS allows it, and phone operating systems delay background work to save battery. Opening the app forces a fresh read.
Your next walk could hatch something
EggVentures turns the steps you already take into pets that hatch, grow, and evolve — no GPS staring, no battles. Open it for twenty seconds before you head out, and there's a payoff waiting when you get back.
