How Many Steps Are in a Mile? (Chart by Height and Pace)

· 4 min read

About 2,000 for an average adult — but height changes it by several hundred. Here's the chart, the formula for your own number, and a steps-to-miles conversion table.

Free on iOS Android

About 2,000 steps for an average-height adult at a moderate pace. Most adults fall between 2,000 and 2,500.

That range isn't sloppiness — it's height. A 5'0" walker and a 6'2" walker cover the same mile several hundred steps apart, and if you're at either end of that, the default 2,000 your app assumes is meaningfully wrong for you.

Steps per mile by height

Based on the standard estimate that step length is roughly 41–42% of height:

Height Approx. step length Steps per mile Steps per km
5'0" 24.8" ~2,560 ~1,590
5'2" 25.6" ~2,470 ~1,540
5'4" 26.5" ~2,390 ~1,490
5'6" 27.3" ~2,320 ~1,440
5'8" 28.1" ~2,250 ~1,400
5'10" 29.0" ~2,190 ~1,360
6'0" 29.8" ~2,120 ~1,320
6'2" 30.7" ~2,065 ~1,280
6'4" 31.5" ~2,010 ~1,250

Two things worth noticing.

The famous "2,000 steps per mile" describes a fairly tall walker. For the average woman at 5'4", the real figure is closer to 2,400. If you're using 2,000 as your mental conversion, you're probably underestimating how far you've walked.

The spread is large. From 5'0" to 6'4" is about 550 steps per mile — over a 10,000-step day, that's roughly a mile of difference between two people with identical step counts.

Work out your own number

The height formula is an estimate. Your actual gait is better, and measuring it takes two minutes:

  1. Find a stretch you can measure — a hallway, a car park, a track.
  2. Walk 20 normal steps. Normal, not deliberate.
  3. Measure the total distance covered.
  4. Divide by 20. That's your step length.
  5. Steps per mile = 63,360 ÷ step length in inches. For kilometres, use 39,370.

Do it at your everyday pace rather than a demonstration pace, or you'll measure a stride you don't actually use.

If you'd rather estimate: step length ≈ height in inches × 0.413 (women) or × 0.415 (men).

Steps to miles, at a glance

Using 2,200 steps per mile — roughly the average adult, and a better default than 2,000:

Steps Miles Kilometres
1,000 0.45 0.73
2,500 1.1 1.8
5,000 2.3 3.7
7,000 3.2 5.1
7,500 3.4 5.5
10,000 4.5 7.3
12,000 5.5 8.8
15,000 6.8 11.0
20,000 9.1 14.6

So 10,000 steps is about 4.5 miles for a typical adult, not the 5 miles the round-number conversion implies.

What else moves the number

Pace. Walking faster lengthens your stride, so a brisk mile costs fewer steps than a strolled one — typically a few hundred. This is why the same route can produce different step counts on different days without anything being broken.

Terrain. Uphill shortens your stride; downhill lengthens it. Sand, snow, and uneven ground all shorten it, sometimes a lot.

What you're carrying. Pushing a pram or a trolley shortens your stride and stops your arms swinging, which causes phones to undercount by 20–30%. If your numbers look low on shopping days, that's why.

Running. Running strides are much longer — roughly 1,400–1,700 steps per mile. Don't apply walking conversions to a run.

Does the exact number actually matter?

For health outcomes, no. The research that matters here measures steps, not distance — the 2025 Lancet meta-analysis that put the meaningful target around 7,000 a day was pooling step counts. It has nothing to say about your stride length.

Where it matters is when you're converting between the two: following a distance-based plan, entering a virtual challenge measured in miles, or comparing your phone against a treadmill readout. In those cases the default 2,000 is quietly wrong for most people, and knowing your own figure fixes it.

Getting your step count right in the first place

A conversion is only as good as the count going into it. Your phone counts steps in a dedicated low-power motion chip, continuously, at essentially no battery cost — into Apple Health on iPhone and Health Connect on Android.

Two things throw it off:

Errors skew toward undercounting, so your real number is usually a little higher than your phone thinks.

If the number is invisible, none of this changes behaviour. That's the actual gap for most people — you can't decide to take the long way back from the printer if you don't know whether today was 3,000 or 8,000. In EggVentures your steps hatch and evolve a creature in the background, pulled from the same Health data, so the count turns into something visibly in progress rather than a figure you'd have to go and look up.

Twenty seconds at the door: open it before you head out, start an expedition, and go. It fills as you walk through the day.

Frequently asked questions

How many steps are in a mile?

Roughly 2,000 for an average-height adult walking at a moderate pace, with most adults falling between 2,000 and 2,500. Height is the biggest variable — someone 5'0" takes around 2,500 steps to cover the same mile a 6'2" walker covers in about 1,900.

How many steps are in a kilometre?

About 1,250 for an average adult, since a kilometre is roughly 0.62 miles. Same caveat applies — your height moves that figure by a few hundred either way.

How do I work out my own stride length?

Walk 20 normal steps, measure the total distance, and divide by 20. That's more accurate than any height formula because it uses your actual gait. To estimate instead: step length is roughly 0.413 × height in inches for women and 0.415 × height for men.

Does walking faster change how many steps are in a mile?

Yes — faster walking lengthens your stride, so you cover a mile in fewer steps. The difference between a stroll and a brisk walk is typically a few hundred steps per mile.

Is 10,000 steps 5 miles?

Close. At 2,000 steps per mile it's exactly 5 miles; most people land somewhere between 4 and 5. If you're shorter than average, 10,000 steps is nearer 4 miles.
