Average Steps Per Day by Age: How Do You Compare?
Published averages range from 4,000 to 9,700 — and the gap is measurement method, not population. Here's what the honest numbers are by age, and why they disagree.
If you've searched this before, you've probably seen wildly different numbers — 4,000 in one place, nearly 10,000 in another. Both are real. They're measuring different things, and knowing which is which is the difference between a useful comparison and a pointless one.
Why the published averages disagree
Three methods, three answers:
Waist-worn accelerometers, unfiltered. NHANES data on US adults 20+ produced about 9,700 steps a day. This counts every detected movement, including shuffling, fidgeting and shifting in a chair.
Waist-worn accelerometers, filtered. The same dataset, with the lowest-intensity movement stripped out to match how a pedometer would count, gives about 6,600 steps a day. This is the figure most researchers treat as comparable to a step count you'd recognise.
Phones. Typically 4,000–5,000. Lower for an obvious reason: a phone only counts while it's on your body. Steps taken while it's on a desk, on charge, in a bag, or in a coat on a hook are invisible.
None is wrong. But comparing your phone's number to an unfiltered accelerometer average is comparing a strict measure to a generous one, and you'll come out looking worse than you are.
Compare like with like: if you track on a phone, benchmark against phone data. Your real total is higher than your phone thinks.

Consistent findings across datasets:
The decline is gradual until about 70, then steepens. A 55-year-old and a 30-year-old are closer than most people assume.
Variation within an age group dwarfs the difference between age groups. In the NHANES data, men aged 65–69 in the most active category exceeded 9,100 steps a day, while the least active women aged 85+ managed under 300. Your age tells you far less about your step count than your circumstances do.
Some of the age decline is health, not age. People who stay well decline much less. This is one reason to be cautious reading the averages as an inevitable trajectory.
The average is not the target
This is the thing worth taking from the article.
The averages above describe what people do, not what's good for them. Those are different questions, and the gap between them is large.
The evidence — a 2025 Lancet Public Health meta-analysis of 57 studies — puts most of the measurable benefit around 7,000 steps a day, with the curve rising steeply below that and flattening above. Compared with 2,000 steps, 7,000 was associated with a 47% lower risk of death from any cause; 10,000 added roughly one further percentage point.
So for most age groups the average sits somewhere below the evidence-based target — which means "I'm about average" is not the reassurance it sounds like.

That last row is the important one. The benefit curve is steepest at the bottom, so someone going from 3,000 to 5,000 gains more health per step than someone going from 9,000 to 11,000. Chasing a round number matters far less than adding to a low one.

If your number looks low
Check measurement before you conclude anything about behaviour:
- Is the phone actually on you? The single biggest source of missing steps.
- Pram, trolley, or hands in pockets? Costs 20–30%, because arm swing is part of the signal.
- One device or two? Phone and watch report differently. Apple Health deduplicates automatically; third-party bridges sometimes break that.
- Android permissions? Samsung Health, Fitbit and Google Fit each need permission to write into Health Connect before anything can read them. This is the most common cause of a suspiciously low or zero count.
Errors overwhelmingly skew toward undercounting. Your real total is almost certainly higher.
Closing the gap
If you are genuinely below where you'd like to be, the realistic gap for most people is 2,000–3,000 steps — roughly twenty minutes.
